He Came to Die

Matthew 20:17-19

In these verse we have a renewed reminder of Jesus’ mission in his prediction of his death. In verses 17-19, we have Jesus’ third clear prediction of his impending death and resurrection. Clearly, Jesus wanted his disciples to understand that his mission included his death as God’s Suffering Servant. I would like to trace the progression of this revelation of Jesus to his disciples. Each one reveals a little more of what would take place in Jerusalem upon their arrival there (cf. 16:21; 17:22 cp. 26:2, 31-32, 45, 56). His impending death was to be “for his people,” but here we discover that the ones putting him to death is also expanded beyond his Jewish opposition.
