Kingdom Paradox

Matthew 19:13-30

In these verses we have a kingdom paradox brought to the front of our thinking in vivid fashion. First, children are brought for Jesus' blessing and the disciples try to send them away. Then, we have a rich young ruler whom the disciples thought to be blessed of God but who went away an example of how hard it is for the rich (and seemingly blessed) to get into the kingdom. These stories illustrate how radically opposite of natural thinking is Kingdom thinking. Thus Jesus ends his instruction with the seemingly contradictory "The first will be last and the last first." Those with great earthly status come last, and those with lowly status will be first.
